Mighty Bright XtraFlex2 Clip-On Light (Black, Kindle Version)

Does a great job lighting up my Kindle 2 when I need it. I clip it to the book cover, though you could safely clip it directly to the Kindle. The line is long and felixible so you can adjust it wherever and however you see fit. I use it primarily when I'm reading in bed, because my bedroom has poor lighting, or when I'm traveling on planes and don't want to disturb others with my overhead light. Amazon Kindle 2 Leather Cover

I purchased this to protect the new, Kindle 2 I purchased as a birthday gift for my fiance. It does exactly what it is supposed to do. There is no need for any card-holders or doo-dads; it is supposed to be a book cover and it is. It is attractive, sturdy leather and does not add significantly to the size or weight of the Kindle. The only improvement I can think of would be if the cover opened top to bottom instead of side to side, so that it could rest on a desk top without being held. Otherwise, the cover offers attractive protection and folds flat, all the way, so that the Kindle can still be held with one hand. Very nice.Buy Amazon Kindle 2 Leather Cover!

M-edge Genuine Leather Executive Jacket for Sony Reader PRS-505 (Mocha)

The original Sony jacket has this cheap plastic hinge that broke off after only 6 months. I bought this to replace the original and I am very satisfied with the quality. The leather is softer than the original and it feels more comfortable holding it. The extra pockets are convenient since I put the transit tickets in them when I commute. M-edge Genuine Leather Executive Jacket for Sony Reader PRS-505 (Pebbled Black)

Overall I'm satisfied with this cover. The cover padding, especially over the screen area, protects the Reader much better than the original cover from Sony. It also looks nice and stylish.

The elastic straps are holding the Reader securely; the end result is better than I expected. There's no risk of the Reader falling off.

My only gripe is the price. For $35, I'd have expected a little more quality. For example, the inside of the cover left black traces on my fingers (and thus, the reader) for the first few days, and the cover smelled strongly of glue and fake leather. Fortunately, both problems seem to have gone away after a week of use. Those slight flaws are stopping me from giving a 5-star review. Sony Silver Digital eReader Bundle - PRS-505 with AC Adapter & Black Cover

I gave this to my wife for her birthday. I was a little afraid at first because she is not very good with the internet, computers and electronics. She loves it!!! Last night she spent at least three hours reading a book she downloaded without my help. It's very easy to use and read. The font can be enlarged which is great for people in their mid 40's. It would be nice if the screen had a back light but this would use the battery up a lot faster. I've only here her say one thing bad and that's that she can't charge the battery and read at the same time.

I purchased this for my red Sony PRS-505 ereader. This is a very nice upgrade to cover that comes with the ereader. The leather is nicely padded and the inside is lined with suede with pockets to store extra memory cards. The insertable flap keeps the cover closed when not in use. This cover can be folded completely behind the ereader when opened and held in place with the flap. Sony PRSPLC02 Leather Cover for PRS505 Digital Book Reader - Pink

I was disappointed in this product. I had a PRS505 - which is what this is supposed to be for - and it didn't "click" onto the EReader at all. It has little tabs at the top and bottom but the EReader just slid out of it. The cover that came with the EReader has a snap feature on the back. This cover didn't have that feature. It looks good and is well made except for the fact that it won't stay on the Reader. I wound up not using it. Sony PRS-700BC Digital Book Reader w/ Accessory Bundle

I have never left a review on Amazon.com before, (out of laziness) although I have bought many products here over the years.
I decided to leave a review for the Sony Portable Reader 700, since there seems to be some misconception regarding this product, and there aren't ENOUGH (real) reviews here, as opposed to the Kindle (Amazon's own proprietary reader, which is heavily advertised here). I think the reason for this is because amazon reading device, is sold EXCLUSIVELY on Amazon.com to Americans. So it's only natural that it has many hundreds of reviews on this site.
The Sony Readers are sold in thousands of locations, airports, stores, online, bookstores etc. and in several countries around the world. Since very few Sony Reader owners bought their device on Amazon, it's only natural that the reviews here are much fewer. (Then unfortunately there are the Trolls, who leave fake bad 'reviews' for the Sony Reader, trying to damage the ratings for some reason known only to themselves).

This is Sony's 4th e-ink Reader. First the Librie in 2004 which was the very first e-ink reader in the world, then the Sony PRS-500 Portable Reader System, in 2006. The PRS-505 which came in three colors in 2007; Sony PRS-505/LC Blue Digital Book Reader, the Sony PRS-505/RC Digital eBook Reader - Red, and the Sony PRS-505 Portable Digital e-Reader System (Silver) and now, the LATEST offering, the Sony PRS-700 Reader Digital Book Portable eBook reader with 6" touchscreen display.
The reason I mention the 700's predecessors is to point out that Sony isn't new at the e-ink (e-paper) business. In fact, they were the first!

I had a hard time deciding between the PRS-505 Red and the PRS-700. The PRS-505 has a slightly crisper screen and I LOVED the stylish red color of the device, especially paired with a red leather cover. But for me, the PRS-700 has better features, and more fancy bells and whistles (and comes with a free cover).
I decided on the 700 and although it's only available in black, it has the features that I wanted most, and it is the latest :).

The device is very grown-up and stylish looking, great to hold, (not too heavy) and looks EXPENSIVE and nice! Non gimmicky and no cheap plastic here, but then again, that is what we have come to expect from a Sony product.
The touch screen is interactive and can be used as a virtual keyboard to make notes. Words can be highlighted and saved, pages can be bookmarked, small natural gestures to turn pages, (there are also small well placed buttons for page turns and zoom etc.) using either the stylus or your fingers. The last page on all the books you are reading, is remembered, so it takes only seconds to continue reading a book where you left off last time.

Page turns are super fast and there is an ability to zoom into PDF documents, and move them around on the page. Hundreds of books, documents, photos, images and mp3's can be stored on the internal device and there are two options for expanding. A SD Memory Card slot (a 4 GB card is in this bundle) and Memory Stick Duo slot, thereby increasing the amount space of books to virtually UNLIMITED!

The Sony PRS-700 supports many document types, PDF, ePub, TXT, RFT, to name just a few. So books can be bought from many sources NOT only the Sony Connect store. Your own documents and ebooks that you already own, can be easily and quickly transferred to your device. A free open source library software called Calibre, (that works very much like iTunes) works fantastically with your Sony and even converts file types and adds metadata and book covers for you.

Sony has recently partnered with Google books bringing their book count up to 600'000 books! The 500'00 Google books are free and mostly in the ePub format. Fantastic news!

Some people have complained about foggy screen, but I don't feel that to be the case. Yes, yes.... I hear that the 505's screen is crisper, but since I don't have one to compare with I don't feel the loss, and I'm quite happy - MORE than happy with my personal choice. I have sometimes forgotten that I am using a Reader and slathered my hands with lotion before going to bed (to read), but found NO smudges on the screen the next day. The Sony PRS-700 definitely has a fantastic NON SMUDGE screen.

Also complaints about glare.... WHAT glare? Honestly! The only (small) glare that I encountered was a small spot off the metal edge of the device, and then again only if an artificial light was shining directly on the device.. A tiny adjustment to to the angle - GONE! Oh, and the Sony Reader is fantastic to read outside!!

All in all, I highly recommend this product for quality, ease of use, support of many formats, thousands of books, stylish design, reasonable price, ability to read in the dark (built in LEDs), and 'coolness' factor!

On a final note I would like to add that there are many ebook and e-ink Readers and devices out on the market now. For eg. The Illiad, Kindle, Bebook, Bookeen Cybook, Hanlin etc etc. There is no wrong or right choice. Do your homework and find the ebook device that best suits YOUR needs. And all those fanatics that support ONLY your own device and try to damage the rating of others.... WHY! That is just plain silly. Who hates their neighbor because they drive a different model car, or hates their friends of family because their mobile phone is a different make or model? I think we should be open minded in order to increase the availability of e-BOOKS, not necessarily of a specific device. IMHOBuy Sony PRS-700BC Digital Book Reader w/ Accessory Bundle!

RCA eBook Reader (REB1100)

I'll let great functions & reviews speak for themselves - the is reader is good. I liked being able to read in car or at night with back light and larger font (which is adjustable). Reader doesn't quite "feel" like a book, but close enough to fill the need to hold a book instead of laptop for reading.

I downloaded a FREE copy of the old Gemstar-Rocket Reader library program which DOES have ROCKET WRITER to convert non-proprietary Word and HTML to RB format for reading; so was thrilled that most of my eBooks DID convert to be able to read on this reader. I'm not a geek and found this easy to do - all you need is the extra time & space on PC for conversion. REB 1100 came with its own Librarian program for PC storage of eBooks; so I used the PC and REB Librarian not the phone connection for my book downloads & storage.

The only difficulty I found with converted books is sometimes the spacing was different in the conversion. (I found this with Mobipocket conversions, too; so was not surprised)Buy RCA eBook Reader (REB1100)!

Cover with Custom Light Shield +2 Aaa Batteries

I received the Sony Reader as a Christmas present and love it! I tried using a traditional book light with the reader, but it just didn't work well. Kept trying to adjust the direction of the light, but to no avail. The Custom Light Shield illuminates the entire page perfectly. It's a pleasure to lie on the sofa, dim the room lights, and still see the entire page clearly. The Sony Reader and the Custom Light Shield make for a perfect combination. Although it's a bit expensive and does make the book a bit heavier, it is well worth the investment! Buy Cover with Custom Light Shield +2 Aaa Batteries!

I also find the screen darker than shown in the picture!! It's more brown.

Ac Charger for PRS505SC and PRS505LC

Though not included with the actual Reader, this charger is extremely useful for a) quick charging, b) recovering from complete battery death and c) charging in situations where there is no computer available.

I bought this charger after noticing that the reader would not charge through a wall plug to USB converter (like the iPhone/iPod and other gadgets use). This seems to be a design flaw of the Reader but not one of the charger. I have been pleased with the performance of the charger and have found that in some cases where I have let the battery die completely in the reader, normal computer USB supply is not enough (or perhaps I wasn't patient enough) to reanimate the device. However, immediately on plugging in the reader charger, the reader rebooted and was charged quite quickly.

I recommend the charger highly but am disappointed that it's an attempt at nickel and diming for accessories by Sony.Buy Ac Charger for PRS505SC and PRS505LC!

Sony Electronic Book Leather Cover (Black)

Do not buy this cover Sony Electronic Book Leather Cover (Black). The leather part is nice enough but your $30 investment is wasted when the 10cent plastic piece in the middle (that holds the ebook reader in place) snaps off at one end. Mine broke within 60 days and neither Ace, nor Amazon, nor Sony would send me a new plastic piece ("we don't have replacement parts available") nor replace the cover. Save your money...use the cover that comes with the eBook reader. That cover has a metal retention system, not the cheap plastic one that's in this one. And, btw, NEVER ever buy from Ace. Sony (PRS-505SC) Silver Portable Digital E-Book Reader System w/ Case

Love to read, but run out of space of your bookcases? Looking for a way to reduce luggage weight & size while travelling? Want to have your reference materials with you in school & work. Looking for a digital book that doesn't need charging every four hours?

The Sony Reader Digital Book PRS505 is a new generation ebook that is easy to use, even for the technically challenged among us.

The PRS505 has been around for a number of months, and is proving to be one of the best of its kind! The more I use it (and locate additional sources of ebooks), the more my enthusiasm increases about this product. (Compare this review to my earlier review on the PRS-505LC to understand what I mean.) There are actually two versions of the same reader. There is the PRS-505 in space-age silver (model number: PRS-505/SC) and a sultry dark blue (model number: PRS-505/LC). The features itself are identical.
I have seen a number of reviews that really do not award the PRS505 all the appreciation that it honestly deserves, and in my humble opinion that is mostly caused by a person's lack of understanding on how the product really works and by pricing strategies currently used by one of the preferred content sellers.

Read on and discover why I believe the Sony Reader Digital Book PRS505 can tempt even the biggest paper book lover into using a Sony Reader Digital Book.

The Sony Reader Digital Book PRS505 is a very compact and light weight-weighing device, weighing only 9 oz. (282 g). It has a 6 inch display (90 × 120mm) using "Electronic Paper", which makes it as easy on the eyes as other printed media, with a near 180º viewing angle. Electronic Paper (or e-Ink as it is officially called) is a new display technology that has the distinct advantage of only using power for page turns, and does not consume power to maintain a page display. Most importantly, electronic paper provides a crisp, clear image that rivals print seen in paper books. It reads well in the bright sun, and just for normal print, you will need a reading light to support reading when it is dark.

I have both the silver and blue versions of the reader, and the verdicts are mixed about the color. The dark blue reader (PRS-505LC) shows fingerprints, and the silver reader (PRS-505SC) may be too light for some (not everyone is equally happy with the light color around the display itself). But after having used both readers, I think it is solely a matter of personal preference.

Text and illustrations are displayed using 8 gray levels, with a screen resolution of 170 pixels per inch (ppi). 170 ppi is currently the highest resolution that is currently available for electronic paper. If you are buying the reader to view images, then "try before you buy"! You can also "reflash" the reader to support Cyrillic fonts (it is very simple procedure).

I read a lot, especially when on holiday, and I always have an issue with the weight of my luggage. I can slip this device in my bag and I've got all my latest books with me. I am also using the reader more and more for the reference material I like to keep nearby. The PRS505 is extremely well-made and sturdy. It can easily take the beating that it is subjected to during travel and normal use (including it falling of your lap while waiting for your flight in an airport lounge and the wear and tear it is subjected to in my briefcase). I have never had to worry about charging the PRS505. The only time that power is consumed is when you turn a page (or access the menu). The amount of reading content that is stored in the devices standard memory lasts me about a week. By that time I hook up the PRS505 to the USB port on my PC to exchange the content. During that time the battery is also being recharged, so far I have not needed to separately recharge the battery. A fully charged battery should allow for approximately 7000 page turns... but in my usage it lasts for about half of that. There is no clear reason that explains the difference (maybe 7000 page turns is in ideal lab conditions, and 3500 page turns is normal for real life).

Sony has been selling e-book devices since 2003, and that experience clearly makes a difference in their product. The screen is easy to see, even if you read in bed by a small light and the feel and weight is no more than an average medium paperback book.

The Sony Reader display can also be changed from portrait to landscape so you hold it horizontally (my preferred way of using the PRS505). The page change button is in a natural place, under your right thumb. The buttons down the side provide a kind of browse feature while reading. To open the book near the beginning you press one of the buttons near the top, the middle button skips to the half way point etc. Hold down the page turn button to skip on 10 pages. This is also an easy way to skim through a book and get an idea of the content without reading it all, although this kind of browsing is not as "nice" as with a paper book. The OS is very intuitive and the navigation controls are very well thought-out. Reader itself is easy to use. You can even listen to mp3 while reading your ebook.
Upon starting up; the reader goes into it's main menu and automatically asks you if you want to continue reading where you left off (perfect). The pages go blank from screen to screen (as you turn the page) and some say this is slow, but take my word for it - after a dozen pages you won't notice this (at least I don't).

The reader itself is only lacking a search function, which would be useful if one has many books on it, but there is still an alphabetized list by author or by title. On the other hand a search feature would require the use of a keyboard or touch screen...

Besides reading ebooks, other sources can also be used for offline reading. One of the most exciting things is that RSS feeds can be downloaded to the Reader. You can get daily updates from all kinds of news feeds like BBC news, The Guardian and the New York Times. Go to http://calibre.kovidgoyal.net/ and get Calibre to add your own feeds. They display well on the Reader and include images. You can also load blogs, web pages and Wikipedia for offline use. Another good conversion tool is called "abclit".
Adobe PDF files can also be displayed, but note that PDF files look better when optimized with the Reader's screen size, because text may appear small if it has not been optimized.

Waterstones is one of the biggest content partners for the Sony Reader Digital Book PRS505. Unfortunately they seem to have a high pricing structure (a minimal pricing difference compared to printed books), without the bargains often found with printed books (e.g. 3 for the price of 2, etc). The Waterstone's website also looks like it was designed by a somewhat stupid child. The only problem is that you can only buy books from the Sony Store if you live in the U.S. or Canada. Fortunately, there are a number of other sites, although you do have to watch the format. When you start searching, it is almost unbelievable how much free and cheap content there is available! New books coming out are reasonably easy to obtain, as are classics. There is a growing number of libraries where you can download ebooks using your library card for free!

Books can be loaded using the somewhat clumsy software that is included in the kit, and the device can also be filled manually as a USB drive.

Tip: If having trouble downloading to the reader from ebooks, minimize the screen and you will see a rectangular shape on the left hand edge. Click and move to the right to show reader and library column. (I had to call tech support to find this out!)

There is a few comments I like to make about the use of memory cards. The SD / SDHC Card slot accepts SDHC Cards up to 32GB (with a firmware upgrade which is taken care of automatically when you load the software on your pc and plug in your reader).
There is a downside to working with large memory, and that is the number of directory entries the reader will need to read each time you go to the content list. If you have a large memory card, you will fill it (that is why you bought it...), and since many ebooks are relatively small in size, you will quickly have a huge directory list.
My suggestion is to use smaller memory cards (e.g. max. 1 or 2GB). If you use a number of smaller memory cards, you can categorize your ebooks even better by using a card per category. The memory cards are hot-swappable (you can swap memory while the reader is switched on).

My conclusion:
Great Buy! A fantastic product for book lovers who are not fully addicted to the actual feel of a book.

Kindle 2: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)

I just got my kindle 3 days ago and I already love it. From a person who can't read off a computer screen for more than 5 minutes this is easy to read off of, and there is no glare whatsoever (also means NO FINGERPRINTS!)

It is exactly what I expected I was going to get. I was a little nervous at first because I tend to read the one star ratings. Those people are crazy. If you want a backlit screen and color-get an ipod touch. If you want to to be able to read (because that is what it is made for--not for color screens and internet access) the kindle is amazing.

I have no complaints, I have only complaints about people looking for something more than a great way to read books. Buy Kindle 2: Amazon's New Wireless Reading Device (Latest Generation)!

Sony Reader Digital Book W Touch Screen

I used the 500 for a couple of years to read my technical books printed on pdf. The convenience of a reader allows me to pack it easily and pull it out for a few minutes to do readings.

When I looked into printing each reference for about $80/each, I considered and purchased the 500 reader for cost reasons. That easily paid for itself, and justified the cost to convince me to upgrade to the newer 505 or 700. Not to mention the knowledge out of the technical reference makes the cost more trivial.

I did not realize how much faster the 505 and 700 are compared to my previous model. Page turns are at least 2x faster than the 500 which makes an impact when reading very large pdf's--more useful when you have to go backwards or page through.

I realized recently that the screens on the 505 and 700 are more crisp (and higher resolution) than my previous model. That was not a big deal with my ebooks, however, it was a world of improvement on pdf's. I can read a full page clearly where I had to use the split landscape screen on the 500 in order to make any clear readings. (However, I may return to the split screen to reduce eye strain). One thing to note, the 505 is much clearer without the touch screen layer; however, the key reason for my purchase was the touch screen.

The page movement gestures anywhere on the screen makes it easy for me to turn pages when I switch hands, or when I hold the reader in different positions. (My wrists gets bored after 20-30 minutes, and I usually have to change positions.)

Some of the technical references that I have in pdf are for certification testing. It is often helpful to keep track of minor notes for later review. The touchscreen with minor note taking features was a perfect solution. I do not take much notes with it, but it is nice to be able to book mark a page and have some minor description of it. (of course, in the past I had a paper and pencil tucked away somewhere; however, it is nice to not have to bother anymore.)

I was surprised to read the poor reviews on the light. In my 505, I had a make shift flexible, battery-powered, led light. It worked well on some late night bus rides. The 700 lighting is bright enough where I do not need to use my custom light. I do not think it is a great reading light; however, I do not feel much of an eye strain with it at the low setting. It definately provides more lighting than most of the booklights out there--my make shift light was done with a coast-amplified led flashlights. I think my light provided more lighting directed at one spot--the 700 has more led lamps along the side of the unit that gave it a more uniform lighting (although the center could be brighter). For me, I think it is great. Like the pen and paper, I no longer have to carry my custom booklight (less encumberance).

The last few things that made me purchase this was an incredible offer by sony credit card. They offered a $200. gift card when purchased $349+ from the sony store. If the promotion was not there, I may have have purchased the 505.

Additional Pros: actually charges by usb now--I have some battery usb chargers that I can now use for road trips. I also noted that it *seems* to be the same charger that the psp uses (use at your own risk)--such that I have been using my psp car charger on my 500 for the last few months.

Cons (made it 4 stars instead of 5): Does not come with a wall charger, uses usb and your computer for charging. Cost is $$$. Lacks a wireless solution to compete against the Kindle. Slightly larger than the 500 (about 0.5 - 1cm). 505 is crisper / clearer.

Sony PRS-505 Portable Digital e-Reader System (Silver)

I really love my silver Sony PRS-505. I had hard time while choosing the best option of eBook reader. I was reading numerous reviews. Twice went to the store to compare Sony PRS-505 and PRS-700 myself. I found that Sony PRS-505 is the only solution for me. These are key points why I love it:

- Stylish design. In comparison to any other reader it looks more attractive. Not too small, not too large, flat and compact - fits to all of my bags and most of my pockets, doesn't take too much attention in public because of nice accompanied cover.
- Book like feeling. Very comfortable reading because of good contrast, your eyes are resting on the soft gray background.
- Faster reading comparing to PC because of nice specialized software: continue reading, fast navigation using buttons on the right side, history, bookmarks.
- Relatively good native support of PDF. 90% of books from my huge PDF library is very readable. PDF text reflowing works good.
- Support of the upcoming ePub standard. CHM books for example could be unpacked and converted to ePub easily.

Sony PRS-505/LC Blue Digital Book Reader

I must say that I'm very satisfied with this product, especially about the fact that you can download all kinds of formats (Microsoft word, Adobe pdf, other text), to the reader. Also the paper like screen it's very similar to reading in a real sheet of paper, it's completely different than reading in a pda or something similar. It's really easy on the eyes. Now that I have it, I've found only two cons, the first is that it doesn't have its own light and the second one is that you can't write notes. If you can afford $100 more I would recommend the next model from sony which is the PRS-700BC, it `s perfect!Buy Sony PRS-505/LC Blue Digital Book Reader!
